Summer tips for healthy skin

Summer tips for healthy skin

Longer hours of daylight and hot, dry, or humid weather can affect our skin differently than in the winter. Here are our top tips for keeping your skin looking its best throughout the summer season.

Level-Up Your SPF

If you do nothing else for your skin this summer, wear sunscreen. Look for sunscreens that offer at least SPF 30, broad spectrum protection and lip protection. It’s essential to apply sunscreen any time you are in the sun as we tend to spend more time outside when it’s warmer out.

Properly Wash and Exfoliate Your Face

Sunscreen is important, and sweat is the body’s natural way of cooling off. But both can do a number on your pores. That’s where washing and exfoliating come in. During the warmer months its suggested to exfoliate more than you might do in winter dependant on your skin type, as this will help unclog the pores and reduces blemishes. Use a face scrub to remove excess dirt and oil from the skin, foaming or gel cleansers can also be great including ingredients such as glycolic and salicylic acid.

Lighten Up Your Moisturizer

Even though you're sweatier in the summer, your skin still needs to be moisturised. A heavy moisturiser can feel like it’s weighing your face down when it’s hot out, we suggest finding a lighter one. A moisturizer is vital to protect your skin in summer. Gel based and water based formulas rather than cream-based products work better as the former are both lighter and non-greasy.

Drink More Water & Fruit Juices

Your water intake in summer should be a minimum of 2-3 litres a day. Your body is about 70% water, and drinking enough of it is vital for optimal health. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things for your body, but it can also have a huge effect on your skin. One simple way to get more water is to eat more foods that are high in water such as watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers and celery. Coconut water and fresh juices are a good way to stay hydrated. Drinking water also helps to flush the toxins from the body.
