Myths and misconceptions: 5 things you need to know about your kinks and coils

Today we are talking all things hair. There are alot of myths and misconceptions when it comes to Black hair, so here are our top 5 things you need to know about your kinks and coils!

𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗜𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲 and don't we know it. From two-strand twists, bantu knots, braids, flat twists, locs, afro puffs and cornrows...the list is endless!

𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄. Black hair in its natural state has a tendency to shrink up (IYKYK) preventing you from seeing its real length, which can lead to the popular belief that it doesn't grow long.The tighter your coils are the shorter your hair will look in appearance, but we know behind those coils can be some serious length. Your hair is always growing, but you may not be retaining the length.

𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗜𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 it just needs more time and care. The more you explore by using different products and finding what works for your hair, the easier it all becomes to manage. Practice different styling techniques and different tools to see what works for you. Your fingers, a wide-tooth comb and soft brushes are a good start and remember Black hair loves moisture and hydration.

𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲𝘀 but it's not always needed. We know protective styles are very important for natural hair health but there can be too much of a good thing. Protective styles allow for little to no manipulation of the hair and by covering your ends allows for length retention and less breakage. However, keeping your hair in a protective style for too long may cause breakage, tangling, knots and dryness.

𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗜𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 but is susceptible to more breakage than our straight haired counterparts. Due to the curls and coils of our strands makes it more prone to increased tangling, making combing harder and therefore needs to be handled with care.
